An easy way to add Google calandars into iCal that lets iCal manage them in a way that feels more “natural” to the app, is to use a tool called Calaboration: http://code.google.com/p/calaboration/

I had a mess round, and it only supports adding one calendar at a time per dav calendar id, but you can add multiple unlike MS exchange, and it does also support .ics files as well. It also now supports LDAP contacts as well.

The iPhone now supports CalDav in OS 3, you don’t need to set up Google Sync for that I don’t think.
